Emergent literacy: Active listening




Did you know that listening – really listening – is a learned skill?

Not only does this skill contribute to effective communication; also, it’s essential for learning to speak and read skillfully. Jeanne  Machado, author of Early Childhood Experiences in Language Arts, tells us that children must be able to hear the sounds of language (phonological awareness) separate from its meaning. She explains that many children who have difficulty learning to read cannot hear the sequences of sounds in words.
